“Adam,” he said, “I don’t know whether you notice it, but it seems like every other word you say is California. Do you really want to go?”
Steinbeck, East of Eden
Despite recently going once, I have managed to spend yet another weekend in California; I was in the Bay Area this past Fourth of July weekend. The primary purpose was to visit family; we had lots of meals, did a photo shoot at Stanford, and ate an impressive cake that my aunt had baked for the occasion—it had two tiers and was adorned with flowers from her garden!
I also had some time on Saturday afternoon to hang out with ACFers; Rachel organized a trip down to the beach near Santa Cruz. Megan, Caleb, Alfred, Esther, Sadie, April, and Kelly also went. (Francis didn’t come because he hates us.) We hung out with some people from Rachel’s church, which made me realize that east coast and west coast people really do give different vibes. In general it was a very stereotypically Californian day: hanging out at the beach, grabbing ice cream, watching the sunset on the drive back up to the Bay, and getting In-N-Out.
Overall, it was a short but sweet trip. I am actually scheduled to head back to California yet another time in September, this time to hike in the Sierra Nevada. I have no clue how I ended up in California so many times this year, but oh well—between the weather and the friends, I’m not complaining.
